Congrats Cluck’N Crabs
Thank you to everyone who responded to support local restaurants, merchants and keep the spirit of the 32 annual Chowderfest alive and well during the COVID 19 pandemic. The focus in 2020 was to raise awareness for the important role that local dining and in person shopping plays in the community as well as to drive direct support to the competitors by purchasing chowder.
With over 3100 votes cast online through registered email, the restaurant with the most votes received the honor for overall Grand Champ.
The 2020 Chowder Month Champion was awarded to Cluck’N Crabs located on Mill Creek Road in Manahawkin for their Cluck’n Red chowder by President Christopher Schwab of the Anderson Insurance Agency and Southern Ocean Chamber CEO Lori Pepenella. The taster’s are looking forward to Cluck’N Crabs to join other returning champions on the field for October 2 & 3 2021.

By Chowder feasting at home or by adding chowder to their dine in order, patrons could celebrate at their own comfort level. By adding the Virtual Chowder Run+Walk+Bike Challenge, it allowed 134 registered participants from around the country to get outside and earn an inaugural medal. With 85 runners/bikers being from across New Jersey, the rest represented states far and wide including Texas, California, Maine, Tennessee, Florida, New York, Connecticut, Maine and Vermont. Leading up to the online closing ceremonies and announcement, the Southern Ocean Chamber held a pop up shop featuring vintage chowder gear, offering free Chowderfest mugs to anyone who stopped by on the way to grab chowder. 2020 Official Chowderfest Merchandise can be purchased online through October 15.

Due to restrictions currently in place, Chowderfest 2020 has morphed into a whole month of activities, chowder purchasing, merchant sales, online Chowderwear store, and a brand new virtual run component. The Southern Ocean County Chamber of Commerce who is the organizer of the festivities recognizes that this is an opportunity to keep the community safe and keep this popular 32-year event on the 2020 calendar will present the inaugural Chowder Run Walk Bike Challenge as part of the ChowdeRestaurant & Merchant Month.
The run will be at the challenger’s own pace, as they set their own course. Registered participants can log in and track their time and distance completing in a day or within the month. The Virtual Chowder Run Challenge will have a real-time leader board, They will have access to a downloadable competitor bib and can choose to take part in a 5 or 10 Mile Walk/Run, a 10 or 20 Mile Bike Challenge. All races have a $25 entry fee with a $1.25 sign up fee. This cost includes real-time race stats, official Chowder Run Challenge 2020 medal, Finisher Certificate, exclusive runner FB Group, and participant runner bib. The medal will be sent upon completion and will be the first edition to be worn to next year’s fest with pride. The Southern Ocean County Chamber of Commerce is presenting their 32 annual Chowderfest differently this year to comply with COVID19 restrictions and safety regulations. Tasters can now purchase merchandise online, complete in the inaugural Virtual Chowder Walk Run and Bike challenge and of course register to vote. There is no cost to become a VIP this year where an email address will get you access to the ballot, digital mapping and Chowderfest Playlist.
Tasters are representing near and far from Philadelphia, Staten Island, and across New Jersey to include Passaic, Somerset, Bergen, Union and Ocean Counties. Pennsylvania counties also include Bucks, Delaware and Montgomery.
